My local pub serves the most delicious hot spiced cider in winter. In an effort to replicate it, I thought I would give the recipe in Jamie Oliver’s 2011 Christmas magazine a try. Not quite as scrumptious as the pub version, but tasty nonetheless and perfect for warming up when you get home from hours of trudging round the shops in search of the perfect Christmas presents. Also good for a big crowd, especially when served with roast pork rolls or hotdogs…mmm.
Hot Spiced Cider, from Jamie Magazine Nov/Dec 2011
2 litres cider
1 orange, halved
8 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 bay leaf
half a nutmeg
1 star anise
1 teaspoon allspice
Pour the cider into a large pan, then stud the orange halves with the cloves. Add the oranges to the cider along with all the other spcies. Gently heat the mixture for about 20 minutes, but don’t let it boil.
Ladle through a sieve into heavy duty glasses, perhaps adding a slice of orange to each one if you fancy.
